When I first went on exchange to San Diego, I remember the air being so polluted that I had difficulty breathing my first week there. I also remember some of the most scintillating sunsets because particle pollution is good for both smog and light diffraction.

Here’s why – it turns out San Diego is one of the worst cities in the US for air pollution: coming 8th in ozone and 17th in short-term particle pollution (not doubt, because of pollution drifting down from LA – the 4th worst polluter.

Fortunately, Atlanta is a tiny bit better. It’s 19th in Ozone pollution… though 16th in long-term pollution (whereas San Diego didn’t even make the rankings for long-term pollution). No doubt, that’s because Atlanta generates it own pollution whereas San Diego imports.
